Note* We are working from a clone of my published domain, so if you see some stuff on there that doesn’t relate in the slightest to Frances Simpson Stevens, that’s why!
I love what you guys have produced so far. It is really impressive. The incorporation of your art and writing is really unique. Those made me excited to explore more. I also think the about page is informative.
Observations:
– I was a little confused when I clicked certain drawings and it took me to more; are they supposed to be associated? Or organized together? Maybe a little clarity there.
– Im not sure what the Re[image]ing page is implying yet – but I am intrigued by it. However, I think establishing the difference between reimaging and representing would help. Im unsure how showing students work will appear differently or have different meaning to the project at the moment.
– I think adding Frances Simpson Stevens work at the beginning would be neat to see in comparison to the new work.
– Your website overall is intuitive; the only issue I really had in that regard was with the home page because I don’t understand where I end up when I click an image.
– The similar projects is a neat addition.
– At the bottom of the home page, I’m assuming its just not typed in yet, but just incase I wanted to say I didn’t know what the “read more ” suggested or was referring to.
– Also the “learn more about me” button takes me to the same page.
I love it so far though! I can’t wait to see the final product; this is so unique and original. I love that no one’s cite or project will ever look like yours since the art is made by you.
The site is lovely! The banner of the opening page, with an illustration of Stevens over a flurry of black & white sketching, is really inviting. It invokes her career and her creativity without being overwhelming. When I start to scroll down, however, things get a little more confusing. Without any background information or explanation, I’m not sure what to do with the illustrations in the grid below . I tried clicking them, but that just enlarged them. The header on the page is good, and the subheading (“Reviving the story of the forgotten futurist artist”) is great, but maybe consider giving viewers a little more information below the header image and before the grid — even just a few sentences explaining what the project is and how to use the images below or what they mean. The welcome from Stevens herself could be more captivating if it was further up the page — maybe above the image grid?
Also, the “How and Why” part, which I’m assuming will display an aggregation of posts tagged to this project, seems redundant when you have such a descriptive navigation bar at the top of the site.
This navigation bar gives us plenty of information, and I especially like the wordplay in “re[image]ining.” Overall, the site design is really well thought out and cohesive. I wonder about the “About” category, though. After my early confusion at the illustration grid, I went to the “About” tab looking for explanations of the project, only to find your scholarly background. I would suggest moving the annotated bib and lit review to another page, maybe named “Theory” or something similar, and in the “About” page give a brief overview of the digital resource.
Navigating the rest of the site is straightforward — I like the “Similar Projects” page, where you can link this project to your other creative works. It’s clear from the site that you both have really focused creative and scholarly aims, and you convey them effectively here.
Overall, I think the project is coming along really well (I can’t wait to see what you do with zine and the re-image-ining!). You have so much great stuff going on with this digital resource that it’s easy for a first-time viewer to get lost in all the images and ideas — a few more places where you explain the project as a whole to your viewers would really help keep visitors engaged!
And one more tiny design comment: is there any way to keep the sketched background image on the homepage static (i.e. attach it to the Stevens portrait and have the two scroll together)? The parallax scroll is cool, but with such a busy image it’s a little distracting.
Really great work!
Hello beautiful classmates! May I just say, extraordinary work thus far: I am very impressed! A couple things that y’all might be getting to anyway that I think are worth mentioning: First, the images on the first page—though beautiful—seem to me to need a little context because, as a user, I am a bit confused as to what they are. Further, when I click on them, they take me to a second page, as opposed to the image I’ve clicked on? I don’t know, I could be totally missing something but I was a bit confused!
Further, I am a little confused about the difference between the “re[image]ining” tab and the “re-presented in a zine” (both of which are extremely clever names!) since both seem to center around the illustrations done by classmates.
Finally, in your bio you mention the existence of Dynamic Velocity of Interborough Rapid Transit Power Station (1915). Is there any way to include an image of this on the website?
Like Meredith said, expanding your explanation of the project might be helpful to fix some of my overall confusion too!
Other than that, however, this this a beautiful beautiful website and very easy to navigate. Y’all are remarkably far along in the process and should be very proud!
