Rules for A Roll of the Dice
Inspired by Stéphane Mallarmé’s A Roll of the Dice (2015 edition)
Rules for Writer
- no singular genre or canon
- breaking free from left alignment of page
- no clear rhyme scheme
- using a page as canvas and knowing what isn’t there also matters
- not being defined by single font or typeface
Rules for Reader
- reader should explore multiple ways/methods of exploring text:
- attention to sound
- looking for meanings in blanks/white spaces
- DONT RESIST (what the book seems to want you to do)
- having a good sense of humor
Ideas for Avant-Garde Students
- Make an animated/digital edition of A Roll of the Dice that allows the text to cascade down the page, accompanied by sound, music, and images.
