Party Pooper Meme

The community that this meme speaks to is the Davidson student who wanders down to F stone cold sober, but can relate to the Davidson student body as a whole.

Only people familiar with Davidson jargon will understand the meaning behind “F.”

The background in the meme represents a fun environment but the viewer is intended to relate to the person in the center, who is obviously miserable.

  1. The girl in the center appears to be holding a stuffed owl, which made me think: “When you thought you were going to Hogwarts.” But the image also evokes a more serious visual precedent—the iconic images of desegregation, in which a young African American girl walks seriously through a jeering crowd. Can memes be used for serious, political or ethical purposes? Or does the humor depend on subverting all seriousness?

Your title (though not the meme itself) made me think of this very silly video: https://youtu.be/gjwofYhUJEM

  2. It’s interesting that the photo reminds you of desegregation, I never thought of that. It’s a picture of me at the Barnes & Noble midnight release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, so you were right on the nose with my Hedwig toy. I guess we could have gone a Harry Potter meme route! I don’t think serious memes would ever be very successful. Like we discussed in class, they are often reactions to tense political climates (i.e. Obama-Biden bromance following the 2016 election results.) I also don’t think serious memes would survive because they are intended to unite based on shared experiences, so the more politically divisive they became, the less popular they’d be.
