Prototype 1 Scarlett’s Bread

My goal for my first prototype was to create the binding for my book. I wanted to incorporate a spider web on which the spider could lie on the cover, so I experimented with the web. I also wanted to incorporate blue, but not have overlapping blue binding string. Thus, I produced this initial binding.

I was pleased with the frame that I was able to construct. While there was a middle crease in it, I didn’t really see a way around it, seeing as I need to fold it in order to cut in the middle. I was not super pleased with the rest, however. The shape of the page made it difficult to construct a symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing web. Further, I didn’t realize that the binding wouldn’t have overlapped with the blue anyway. So, in the future prototype, I realized I could make the binding blue as well, matching the cover color.

Because I was dissatisfied with the cover, I didn’t pursue finishing the back frame. However, after discussion with Dr. Churchill, I contemplated the possibility of making into a bread shape, as the spider’s journey ends up in a loaf of bread stapled to the ceiling (yes, it’s pretty weird).

Ultimately, I learned that in order to make a more aesthetic web, I should have planned more, drawing out a model on paper of where the threading would go, making sure how much string I need, etc. Also, I learned to simply draw up a model of what I was imagining for the binding itself because I completely overlooked the fact that the blue string wouldn’t overlap with the blue paper.
