The Struggle to Commit Pictures and Words to Paper

Due to my fear of messing up and lack of control, I was not able to physically glue or tape anything into my final book structure. This past weekend I worked on finding images and words that I believed would represent my goal for the book. I flipped through a copy of Essence magazine and 3 copies of Glamour Magazine. I was happy and not surprised that many of the models and advertisements in Essence suited my topic of an ode to black women. Many of the advertisements were related to natural hair products, beauty brands, and other stores and brands that are owned by black women or used predominantly by black women. In the Glamour Magazines it was more difficult to find images and texts that stood out to me because the majority of the women in the magazine and the articles were not geared towards black women.

In my final product, I want to have separate sections that include a section about hair, a section of powerful, and influential black women, and then a more personalized section that includes images and texts that personally connect with. I also have a letter I wrote to the black students that attended my high school after the results of the election. That letter contains many thoughts and ideas that I wish my younger self had known in high school, so I want to include it in my book. I know that my progess is slow, but this is how my brain functions and I would rather have everything planned out before putting the texts and images on paper.
