Ode to Black Women: Reflection on Prototype 1

When we first talked about creating a book in class, I was one of the students who was high-key freaking out. The thought of creating a book from scratching using some of techniques we learned made my anxiety levels pretty high. I’m usually a creative person, but before any creative assignment or activity I complete, I always stress myself out and tend to beat myself up if what I create is not perfect. Because of my fears and hesitation, I was not able to put anything down on paper before class on Friday.

After more time to reflect on the assignment and what type of book I wanted to create, I came up with the idea to create an ode to black women: an ode to my natural hair black women, my creative black women, my queer black women, and my intelligent, beautiful, and lovely black women. I plan to use magazine images and words as the background in my book to represent the power and influence on how black women are represented. I also really enjoy magazines and how placing extra words and images on top can influence what stands out on the page. I also plan on using some of my own personal writings to give my book a personal touch. I am nervous and excited about what the final product will entail, but hopefully it will be something that I am proud of.
