What do we make both of the use of the word academic and its different connotations, and of the tensions between money and art (especially thinking back to Greenberg and his overtly communist interpretations and the typical presence of wealthy patrons or figures of some sort in these artists circles).

A lot of Picabia’s work deals with gender, from the extremely sexualized ‘Femmes au Bulldog,’ to the idea of the “daughter born without a mother,” to paintings such as I See Again in Memory My Dear Udnie, in which “the sense of arousal the artist experienced is is well preserved,” to name just a few. Do we think that the way Picabia himself handled gender, apart from the marginalization of women across the movement, contributed to his wife’s virtual nonexistence in the history books as compared to other women in the movement?

Thesis: I think Buffet-Picabia’s overarching thesis really begins with her very first sentence, though it is not necessarily fully articulated in that sentence.
